Irish Bog History
Ireland is famed for its bogs, which is a type of wetland that accumulates peat, it is formed of dead plant material such as mosses and shrubs. Bogs are an integral part of Ireland’s landscape and can be found all across the island and particularly around the wetlands of Lough Neagh. Traditionally, turf was cut from bogs and burned for heat, the aroma created from burning turf is very distinctive. Join a tour at the bog museum to find out some fascinating stories and discoveries from our raised bogs datign back thousands of years.
BOG MUSEUM
Explore the good old days and visit the Bog Museum with a treasure house of exhibits of old artifacts which reveal much about the rich and varied history of Ireland before and after the ice age. Followed by a 20 minute video on our big screen showing a “Day in the Bog”.

Come along and learn about the bogs and industries that supported the area surrounding Coalisland on Sunday 12th June from 10am – 4pm. There will be tours every hour from 10am with the last tour at 3pm. Create your own turf souvenir to take home. Step back in time and visit the old weaving factory museum and experience the days of old when men and women worked long hours over the large looms which still stand as they were left all those years ago.
